This season, 3sixteen has created this beautiful fabric that has been dyed in natural indigo before being hand-screened with a mid-century inspired discharge print. This process has been made in a small workshop established in India, using a translucent ink that lifts dyes from cotton fabric. The print itself is inspired by an album cover painted and designed by the abstract artist Josef Albers.
India was the earliest major indigo production centre, and to this day, Indian craftsmen still produce some of the most vibrant and beautiful indigo on the planet. The natural dye on this piece is a lighter shade of blue than traditional Japanese indigos, which tend to be deep and violet in nature. The artisans of this workshop primarily work with natural indigo dyes derived from plants, as opposed to synthetic indigo. We’ve found this process to result in much more aggressive colour loss. If you’re into a fabric that will fade beautifully as it’s worn and washed over the next year or two, this is the one for you.
This Leisure Shirt is modelled after vintage 1950’s open-collar vacation shirts. Its confident, open-collar design perfectly captures the season’s laid back energy. The shirt is finished with coconut shell buttons that have a beautiful texture and colour.
Founded in LA by Johan Lam and Andrew Chen over a decade ago, 3sixteen’s philosophy is evident in pieces they’ve developed since 2008: shirts, jackets, basics and accessories all take cues in form and function from their jeans. Fabrics and trims are always chosen for their capacity to develop character with time. 3sixteen aim is that, with diligent wear, the customers are rewarded with something well-aged, never “old.”
